Info For Professionals
Tourette Syndrome is a silent epidemic, affecting 1 in 200 children - as many as 28,000 kids in New Jersey alone!
To familiarize yourself, you may first wish to view an excellent educational film about TS presented by Dr. John T. Walkup, MD of Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
Many with TS also exhibit symptoms of related neurological disorders, such as: OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Depression, Learning Disabilities, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Fine Motor Difficulties.
TS is often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed by physicians who do not have expertise in, or experience with, the disorder. Most families see a variety of doctors and allied professionals before the disorder is properly identified and treatment is begun. Finding professionals who understand and can properly treat TS and its associated disorders is frustrating and challenging, with the average lag time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis being seven years!
To address this need, a cornerstone of NJCTS's mission is to cultivate and educate an expanding community of professionals sensitive to the needs of those with TS and its associated disorders.
We provide educational opportunities, services and resources for doctors, teachers, mental health professionals and others involved with the diagnosis, care and search for better treatment modalities to get involved with us both through education and partnership. |
