MORE THAN JUST TICS
A neurological disorder that’s much more common than most people think, Tourette Syndrome (TS) affects as many as 1 in 200 children – more than 28,000 kids in New Jersey alone – with many families not even aware of the diagnosis.
Individuals with Tourette Syndrome may also suffer from co-morbid disorders such as ADD/ADHD, OCD, Rage, Depression, GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) and other problems which can confuse the diagnosis of TS, and whose treatments may be inappropriate for those with TS.
There is still a wide gap of understanding about TS in society, in schools, at home and even within the healthcare community – and a severe shortage of knowledgeable professionals qualified to help.
To address these problems, and with the assistance of the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, we have created The New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome and Associated Disorders (NJCTS) to serve as a model resource for providing help for those with TS, training a new generation of professionals qualified to work with people who have TS, and resources for researchers looking into more effective treatments and possibly a cure.
